How will it affect the regional peace if the arms embargo on Iran is not extended?

The United States demanded for the restoration of sanctions on Iran as the arms embargo on the middle eastern country will end in November this year. This appeal of the Trump administration was rejected while taking the call at the UN.

The US secretary Mike Pompeo cited safety and peace within the region to extend the sanctions but faced rejection. But considering Iran’s activities and its involvement in the funding of terrorist organizations within the region, embargo might have actually helped in maintaining the peace in the region.

The problems with the sanctions imposed by the United States was that it destroyed Iran’s economy and troubled lifestyle there. The sanctions had affected the country to the extent that food and services also were scrapped for public usage. But as far as arms embargo is concerned, extending it will not only benefit the civilians in the country but also control the finding that the government gives to terror groups like Hezbollah.

The leader of the terrorist group accepted himself that no matter what sanction the US puts on their activities, they will keep on receiving funding from the ‘Islamic Republic of Iran’. In one of the biggest reveals by the group, Lebanese based crop of terrorists said that Hezbollah receives full financial and arms support from Iran.

He also claimed as long as Iran has money, the terror group will continue to sustain itself only after which the US imposed sanctions on the country that cut out all the financial means for the country. Only Iran realized that it has entered deep waters. From that time, no matter how much of a strong face Iran exhibits, it is scared of the US. Iran is also scared of the results that public protests might bring in especially after 2019 protests by the people where they demanded resignation of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Within hours of peaceful gathering in November, the cause spread like wildfire in 21 cities in Iran. These protests stopped only with the announcement of a coronavirus pandemic. So, now the Iranian government will take each step very cautiously to control the violence and public frustration for itself.

An extension on the arms embargo would have just ensured safety in the region furthermore. It is fairly easy from Iran to keep dealing in weaponry through Russia and China who are more than willing to supply weapons in the Arab country. Even though Iran will look to change its image among its people and the world, the deep ties with the militant groups will certainly come back to haunt the government.

Iran will want to work as a slow poison in the Middle East region so that it keeps the public trust intact and engages in wrongful doing. This is especially dangerous after the remark of Iran which came against the UAE when the gulf state and Israel decided to normalize their relationships to maintain the peace in the region. Iran sided with Turkey and Qatar, who are known supporters of terrorism.

In such a case, the only way to control Iran's volatile nature is to ensure an arms embargo on it while relieving all other sanctions to make it easy for the country to deal with the ongoing pandemic.
