  Here’s something interesting about what I read today. By withdrawing, Trump, like Obama, now wants to fulfill a campaign pledge. He is at the forefront of talks with the Taliban, but they have shown no sign of giving up their violence. The key targets of terrorism today are the Afghan people and the security forces, and the Afghan state is still weak, meaning that it does not sustain security on its own. The US has not, however, evolved from its failures and is still guided by strategic narcissism. The contradictions offer a feeling of deja vu to observers.   The US is the powerhouse of the world, but great responsibility comes with great power, and that responsibility lies not only with American taxpayers, but also with the world, as US policy decisions have foreign consequences.
