Critics view Turkish presence in Somalia even after elections as means to build its influence

On the eve of January 25, the clash between the Dervish forces of Jubaland State and the government forces of Gurgur, backed by Turkish forces showed deep infiltration of latter in the African country’s internal affairs.   Turkish forces set their feet in Somalia back in 2010 in the name of providing humanitarian to latter, post a deadly drought which took away a quarter of a million lives. Gradually the aid organizations were replaced by Turkish companies, who took over the control of the country’s key port in Mogadishu and Adam Adi International Airport in the capital, along with managing health and educational institutions across Somalia.   Unlike the previous decade, Ankara is no more limiting its influence to Mogadishu’s port and aid work. It has seeped further in reaching out for the country’s political corridors with an aim to introduce Qatari plan of setting an authoritarian system, leaning towards Turkish-Qatari axis.   Turkey, which has its military base in Mogad

Farmaajo to extend his Presidential term for two years amid growing concerns of arms deal with Qatar

Last year in May, there were reports in the media of Somaliland that the President of Somalia Mohamed Farmaajo will be delaying the election in 2021 and rather go ahead with extending his term as the President of the country for two more years. This is merely the last concern for the Somali people as the persisting problem of weapon use in the country still haunts the civilians. Earlier the Somali government briefed the press about the prevention of weapons crossing the Somalian border by international agencies or parties. This information should have provided some relief to the people but on the contrary, the opposition parties fear that it is the government who might have seized the weapons. After this information was revealed, the opposition accused the Farmaajo government of hiding weapons which were purchased illegally. A media reports also claimed that a committee of the United Nations sent a letter to Somalia to probe the matter and the imposition of an arms embargo on the

43 Migrants headed to Europe drown as they leave Libya

Migrants who were headed for Europe travelled off the coast of Libya through to the Mediterranean Sea drowned midway. As per latest reports, 43 migrants have drowned with the boat that capsized on Wednesday. The United Nations migration agency confirmed the news saying that the ship indeed overturned on January 20. The international agency said that the ‘tragic’ incident was the first maritime disaster of 2021 that involved migrants, those seeking better lives in Europe. Last year, many such incidents occurred where those seeking to go to Europe and start their new lives in the continent away by an ocean from a distance, lost their lives. The European Union has stepped up and partnered with Libya’s coast guard and their local groups to stem the sea crossing. Many of the human rights groups do not approve of these policies compiled by the EU saying that they make locals more vulnerable to the armed groups and subject them to confinement and abuses. After the accident, the IOM

Is Turkey exiting NATO? Turkey’s rift with NATO members may lead to its exit

Turkey is once again in the news for disrupting balance in NATO and despite the warning that the country and its government is facing, it continues to poke the western alliances. Recent reports suggest that Ankra might exit from NATO. Earlier, the Vice President of United States Mike Pence also warned Turkey in April 2020 regarding the purchase of the Russian S-400 missile system. He had said that if it goes ahead with the deal, it might end up losing NATO membership. "Turkey must choose: does it want to remain a partner of the most successful military alliance in the history of the world? Or do they want to risk the safety of this partnership by making reckless decisions that threaten our alliance?" We have made it clear that we will not stand by while NATO allies buy weapons from our adversaries, weapons that threaten the very cohesion of this alliance," Pence said. Turkey was seen getting more and more involved in Russia. It had sent one of its military personne

US Secretary of State M. Pompeo expected to clarify ties between Al Qaeda and Iran

Tuesday, January 12, 2021. Washington plans to issue a statement saying Iran has links to the al-Qaeda terrorist organization. The US wants to disclose information that Tehran has financed and has links to terrorist organizations. Iran is a target for the Washington administration and faces many political challenges, especially during Donald Trump's presidency. According to US intelligence, Abu Muhammad al-Masri was involved in the masterminds of the bombing of US embassies in Africa. These and other allegations related to Tehran's support for the Houthi militia in Yemen and Hezbollah, which the United States recognizes as a terrorist organization, have prompted the United States to come up with a plan to prove Iran has links to terrorist organizations. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo plans to make clear Iran's links to al-Qaeda. This comes as Trump's term is less than 8 days away. President-elect Biden is facing amid tensions between Tehran and Washington deter

US designates Yemen’s Houthis as a terrorist group

In a move to minimize presence of terrorism in the Arab nations, the United States has declared Yemen based Houthis as terrorist group. The Yemeni government has welcomed the decision saying that the Houthis ‘deserved to be classified as terrorists’. With only 10 days remaining for Joe Biden to take over the White House, the Trump administration decided to declare the Houthi militia, who have been spreading violence and torturing the Yemenis for more than six years, as a foreign terrorist organization. Houthis are backed by Iran and all violent attacks in Yemen have been reportedly funded by the government of Iran. “The Houthis deserve to be classified as a foreign terrorist organization not only for their terrorist acts, but also for their permanent efforts to prolong the conflict and cause the worst humanitarian disaster in the world,” said the ministry in a statement. The Houthi representative and political commander, Mohamed Ali al-Houthi, condemned the move saying that the

Northern Syria struggling due to violence, in-fighting of Turkish backed groups

Like most parts of the last decade, violence in Syria sees no end with the latest target being a town in the Northern part of Syria. A town in this part of the war-torn country has become the battleground of Turkish backed groups and US backed forces. There are fears of large scale Turkish evasion in the area resulting in an increase in violence in the region. Activities from the rebel groups and especially those backed by Turkey have seen a rise in the town of Ain Issa as the Ankara funded Syrian militias are attacking US backed democratic forces. This has resulted in people living in the area to displace and find a roof somewhere else in the country as they cannot even choose neighboring sites because fights had already damaged these areas. The town has been in control of the Kurdish population led by SDF, which is also backed by the United States in its fight against the Islamic States capturing of major towns in the country. Russia, however, is against this as it strongly s
