The Chief of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, visited Syria on Wednesday for the first time after the earthquake. He travelled to Aleppo and Damascus in Syria. Tedros, the highest-ranking UN official, visited the country to check on earthquake victims. On Wednesday, he visited several hospitals and shelters for displaced people in Syria. The Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia Mohamed Hussein Roble today received in his office the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia, Ambassador James Swan. During the meeting, the two leaders discussed issues such as elections, security and international cooperation in Somalia. The meeting comes after James Swan said the international community's wishes were not wanted in Somalia. The ambassador pointed out that the current elections in Somalia are not in the interest of Somali people and the way forward, and that the international community wanted transparent and credible elections. This has created fear in the Farmajo government and the new prime minister, who has no political experience and has a difficult task ahead.   The United States demanded for the restoration of sanctions on Iran as the arms embargo on the middle eastern country will end in November this year. This appeal of the Trump administration was rejected while taking the call at the UN.   The US secretary Mike Pompeo cited safety and peace within the region to extend the sanctions but faced rejection.   Mistreatment of Kurdish villagers are brought human rights activist to the streets of Turkey. There has also been news over torture and food poisoning. These claims have been made by three pro- Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) politicians. Members of Amnesty International meanwhile are demanding government investigate the circumstances in which two Kurds were thrown off a military helicopter. But the government has accused the HDP of having ties with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and that thousands of its members have been prosecuted for the same reason, including its leaders. The HDP denies such links. The PKK is designated a terrorist group by Turkey, the European Union and US. Although Iran and Turkey have differing views of the region, they now appear to be close friends and allies to play an important economic,   political and mostly military role in Africa. Iran is striving to become the most powerful state in the Middle East in terms of military,   science and technology. Turkey, which is currently expanding its presence in the Middle East and Africa, appears to be playing a key role in establishing military bases in Africa and becoming the most influential country in the Indian Ocean and East Africa in particular.   Turkey has a large presence in Somalia and has military bases in many parts of Africa.
