Netflix has consented to limit the speed at which it transmits shows to subscribers to decrease its traffic across Europe by 25% – a measure that may influence picture quality for viewers – in a contract with the EU to guarantee that broadband systems perform well as a large number of people are quarantined to their homes.
Netflix CEO Reed Hastings consented to regulate the bit rate across Europe and the UK for 30 days. Netflix has 51 million subscribers across Europe, and 11 million in the UK.
The deal comes after discussions with Thierry Breton, the industry commissioner of the EU's executive branch, the EC.
"We assess that this will lessen Netflix traffic on European networks by around 25% while additionally guaranteeing proper quality service for our viewers." Netflix representative expressed.
Social separating measures and lock-down to battle the coronavirus have increased the demand for internet capacity because of which a few clients will see a drop in Netflix picture quality.
According to the Guardian, Breton stated: "I welcome the swift move that Netflix has made to save the smooth working of the web during the Covid-19 crisis while keeping up a good experience for subscribers."
