While the whole world is trying different ways of containing the pandemic Covid19 virus, it seems Bangladesh has thrown caution to wind. Repeating a religious mistake that was made in Iran, Bangladesh is preparing for a mass prayer at Raipur where thousands of devotees are meeting to sound on holy hymns or what is better known as ‘healing verses’.
Many countries have issued a public warning against mass gatherings and meetings, and this is now being considered a criminal offense. A similar incident happened in Malaysia where more than 15000 people had gathered and later became the main reason for the Covid-19 virus spreading to neighboring countries like Cambodia, Brunei and Singapore, apart from infecting people locally to the tune of 500.
As the virus is highly contagious in nature, medical advisory across the globe is requesting quarantine and any kind of group gatherings across the world.
According to the local police chief Tota Miah, organisers did not get permission from the authorities to hold the event - though such local gatherings in Bangladesh often do not rely on getting official permits. The religious event at Raipur in Lakshmipur district came to be noticed as Bangladesh confirmed its first death due to the virus. Additionally, some 17 people in the country have tested positive so far, although many experts are skeptical over the official figures.
Under the influence of a local religious leader, people have gathered under an impression that the holy prayers will protect them all against the spread of the coronavirus. The prayers performed were that of the Six Quranic Verses of Healing. A mass infectious outbreak cannot be ruled out. However no new cases have been reported by the local authorities but the country already has 300 plus infected cases and more than 20 already dead.
