Turkey has said that Malaysia and Indonesia have expressed
keen interest in buying armed drones from Turkish defence firm Baykar, which
has Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan‘s son-in-law as one of its
directors.
The foreign minister of Turkey, Mevlut Cavusoglu, said,
“Many Asian countries, especially Malaysia and Indonesia, are interested in
buying our defence industry products. Agreements are being signed.”
After attending the funeral of former Prime Minister Shinzo
Abe in Tokyo, the Turkish minister also said, “We would most gladly meet
Japan’s need for drones.”
In a news conference at the Japan National Press Club,
Cavusoglu also claimed that Turkish-made armed and unarmed drones are among the
best in the world. He reportedly said, "It was Turkish drones that
prevented the invasion of Tripoli in Libya.”
He said that in the coming days, delegations from Japan and Turkey
will meet to discuss potential cooperation in defence and security.
According to media reports, international demand for Turkish
drones has increased in recent months after their impact on conflicts in Syria,
Ukraine and Libya.
In June, Baykar offered three unmanned aerial vehicles
(UAVs) to Ukraine. Ukraine also said that the Turkish drones proved their worth
against the Russian forces during the war. Earlier, Baykar had sold the drones
to Ukraine despite Russian objections.
Cavusoglu said that Ukrainian parents are naming their boys
"Bayraktar" after Baykar Technology's Bayraktar TB2 drones, which
have been highly successful at targeting Russian vehicles in Ukraine.
In June, a crowdfunding campaign in Ukraine had reportedly
raised enough funds to buy "several" of the Bayraktar TB2 model for
Ukrainians to use in defence against the Russian forces. . The TB2 drone became
popular in Ukraine because it helped Ukrainian forces destroy Russian artillery
systems.
Haluk Bayraktar, the CEO of Baykar, said that Japan's
ambassador to Turkey once visited Baykar facilities.
