The decision to dissolve the Thai opposition Future Forward Party may deprive voters of their right to vote. This is stated in a statement posted on Saturday by the US Embassy in Thailand.
"The United States strongly supports democratic governance around the world and appreciates Thailand’s recent appointment of a democratically elected government. Although the United States does not support any particular political party in Thailand, more than 6 million voters have chosen the Future Party in the March 24 election. Decision to dissolve the political union may deprive her voters of the right to vote and calls into question their representation in the Thai electoral system, "the statement says.
On February 21, the Thai Constitutional Court decided to dissolve the opposition Future Party for violating the electoral law, as it accepted an illegal loan from its leader Thanathorn Chungrungreangkit.
The court decided that funds in the amount of 191.2 million baht ($ 6.03 million) received by the party from its head were transferred illegally, which is a violation of the basic law on political parties. The court also banned 16 leaders of the Party of the Future, including its leader, from engaging in political activities for 10 years.
It has already been announced the creation of a new political institution - the Committee of the Future, which will continue the work of the liquidated of the Future Forward Party.
