Libyan parties in Geneva agree on a permanent ceasefire

By Victoria Hudson.

On Tuesday, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in Libya, Ghassan Salamè, confirmed in a press conference in Geneva, that the Libyan military dialogue committee (5 GNA + 5 LNA) agree on the need to transform the armistice into a permanent ceasefire.

Salamè explained that this principle was adopted as the base of the first session and will be the basis for the work of next days, which will determine the conditions to apply this decision on the ground.

"We started with one-to-one sessions and when the time comes, I don't exclude that the two parties will meet." Salamé stressed that it is the first time that high-ranking officials of the two sides have met and it’s not possible to resolve all Libyan issues in one meeting.

"Certainly, the European proposal will be put on the table this week,” said the UN envoy and head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

In a separate context, speaking from New York, Secretary General Antonio Guteress called what is happening in Libya a "scandal", referring to the actions of regional actors involved in the Libyan file.

"The only good news is that it was possible to have a 5 + 5 meeting in Geneva".  Guteress says to be really concerned for the continuous involvement of foreign powers in Libyan internal affairs, while hoping that the joint committee will succeed in producing some results.

"But let's be clear, what we have seen happening in Libya is totally unacceptable," he added noting that all the commitments of the Berlin Conference "seem to have been made without the real will to respect them".

On January 19 the Berlin Conference on Libya, organized by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, has gathered the Governments of Algeria, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Turkey, the Republic of the Congo, United Arab Emirates (UAE), the United Kingdom and the United States of America and High Representatives of the United Nations, the African Union, the European Union, and the League of Arab States.

The participants reaffirmed their strong commitment to the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity of Libya. Only a Libyan-led and Libyan owned political process can end the conflict and bring lasting peace.

The participants also committed to refraining from interference in the armed conflict or in the internal affairs of Libya and urged all international actors to do the same.

After 48 hours from the conclusion of the German summit, UNSMIL registered at least 50 violations of arms embargo by the same Governments attending the Conference, in particular by Turkey in support of the forces aligned with Libyan Government of National Accord and by UAE in support of the Libyan National Army (LNA) led by Feld Marshall Khalifa Haftar.

Al Gore has history of climate predictions, statements proven false

Noted climate activist and former Vice President Al Gore, who made headlines this week after he claimed   global warming was "boiling the oceans,"   has a history of making climate-related proclamations later proven to be false. During remarks made Wednesday at the  World Economic Forum summit  in Davos, Switzerland, Gore warned that continued carbon emissions into the atmosphere would destroy the planet and lead to widespread calamities. "We’re still putting 162 million tons [of greenhouse gas] into it every single day and the accumulated amount is now trapping as much extra heat as would be released by 600,000 Hiroshima-class atomic bombs exploding every single day on the earth," Gore said. "That’s what’s boiling the oceans, creating these atmospheric rivers, and the rain bombs, and sucking the moisture out of the land, and creating the droughts, and melting the ice and raising the sea level, and causing these waves of climate refugees." Gore then not
