The world’s richest person and Twitter's new boss, Elon Musk, has converted several rooms in the Twitter office into small sleeping quarters for employees at the Twitter headquarters in San Francisco, according to a report by Forbes.
The sleeping quarters have unmade mattresses, drab curtains
and giant conference-room telepresence monitors. One room also has bright
orange carpeting, a wooden bedside table, a queen bed, and two office
armchairs.
According to Forbes, beds are for "hardcore"
staffers who can stay and work overnight at the office. Reportedly, there are
around four to eight-bedroom pods per floor.
In November, Musk gave hundreds of Twitter employees an
ultimatum that they work "long hours at high intensity" or leave the
office. He reportedly fired at least half of Twitter's employees, and several
other workers left because of the hardcore work culture.
Reportedly, ever since Musk took over Twitter last month, he
fired about 50 per cent of the Twitter staff, including the top executives,
scrapped a work-from-home policy, which was introduced in 2020, and imposed
longer working hours.
In November, he also held an all-hands meeting with staff to
talk about various issues related to work. He asked them to work 40 hours in
the office. The tech billionaire also told employees to brace for 80-hour
weeks.
Earlier this year, Musk made a bid to buy the social media
giant for $44 billion. However, he backed out from the deal in May, alleging
that the social media company understated the number of bot and spam accounts
on the platform. Subsequently, a series of lawsuits started between Musk and
Twitter. After months of speculation, Musk said he would proceed with the
Twitter deal on the original terms. He purchased the social media giant for $44
billion ($54.20 a share) in October.
