Iranian athlete Elnaz Rekabi returned home safely on Tuesday
amid claims that she went 'missing' after competing without wearing a hijab
(headscarf) during the finals of the Asian Climbing Competitions in Seoul, the
capital of South Korea.
People thought that Rekabi defied the country's diktat for
female athletes and ditched the mandatory hijab to extend her support to women
protesters amid protests in Iran. However, she said that her veil had fallen by
mistake while she was competing in an international event in Seoul.
Her footage of competing without wearing a hijab came amid
protests in the country after the death of a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman
in police custody following her arrest by the morality police over her improper
Hijab.
Amini was arrested by Iranian morality police in Tehran, the
capital of Iran, on September 13 for allegedly not complying with the country’s
strict dress codes that require women to cover their heads. The police
reportedly took Amini to a detention centre for a “re-education lesson” on
Hijab and modest clothing. However, she collapsed at the detention centre. She
was taken to the hospital. However, the doctors pronounced her dead three days
later.
Amini’s family and cousin said that she was assaulted at the
detention centre. Amini’s cousin from
Iraq also said that she died after a "violent blow to the head.” Amini’s
family claimed that Iranian morality police hit her in the head with a baton
and she lost consciousness. However, Iran’s Forensic Organisation said in an
official medical report that “Amini’s death was not caused by blows to the
head.” Iranian authorities claimed that she died from pre-existing medical
conditions.
The protests erupted across Iran a month ago. However,
people haven't stopped their protests even after the violent crackdown on
protests by the security forces.
