Lima Group Welcomes US Initiative to Create Provisional Government in Venezuela

The countries that are part of the Lima Group welcome the US initiative to create an interim government in Venezuela to overcome the political crisis in which this South American republic is located.
The corresponding statement on Thursday circulated by the Colombian Foreign Ministry.

"We, the Group also greatly appreciate the important proposal of the United States of America on a democratic transition in Venezuela, on the formation of a transitional government," the document says, the text of which was published on the agency’s website.

It is noted that members of the organization "with extreme concern monitor the situation in which Venezuela is located."  "We urge the international community to work together to support the Venezuelans in finding a peaceful solution that will urgently eliminate a serious crisis and emergency, as well as restore the rule of law, constitutional and democratic order in Venezuela," the document emphasizes.

On Tuesday, US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo announced that Washington is putting forward a plan to resolve the domestic political crisis in Venezuela, which provides for the creation of an interim government in this country, which will include representatives of the opposition and the current government, as well as the subsequent lifting of sanctions.  According to him, the United States is proposing the establishment of a "state council that will serve as the transitional government until the" presidential and parliamentary elections, which are expected to take place in 6-12 months.

Moreover, as explained by Pompeo, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and opposition leader Juan Guaido must recognize that the transitional government is "the only executive body during the transitional period."  Venezuelan leadership called the initiative an attempt to intervene in its internal affairs.

The situation in Venezuela escalated after Guaidó, whose appointment to the post of speaker of the parliament two days earlier, was canceled by the Supreme Court on January 23, 2019, declared himself acting president.  He was recognized as the interim head of state by the United States, Lima Group countries (except Mexico), the Organization of American States and most EU countries joined them.  Maduro called the incident an attempted coup and announced the severance of diplomatic relations with the United States.  In his support, Russia, Belarus, Iran, China, Cuba, Nicaragua, Syria and Turkey spoke out.

The Lima group was formed in August 2017 in the capital of Peru, where representatives of 12 countries (Argentina, Brazil, Guatemala, Honduras, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Chile) signed a joint declaration on the non-recognition of the Constitutional Assembly  Venezuela convened at the initiative of Maduro without a referendum.  Guyana and Saint Lucia later joined the group.
