Report suggests progress in Syria still very much on cards despite disappointing pattern

Progress -Syria

Last report by the United Nations projected disappointment with the way things have been functioning in the country but despite that officials are positive for the curve of growth when it comes to administrative order.

The outcome of the last meeting of the Syrian Constitutional COmmittee was termed as disappointing but the UN special envoy for the nation stressed that members must not get disheartened and continue to do their vital work.

On Wednesday, the Security Council stated that there is a lot of scope by which a country could possibly move in the right direction. The problem with the reports or the changes drafted for the constitution was that they were unable to move ahead from the submission to the discussion regarding those drafts and finally move on to a productive textual drafting process.

Geir Pedersen stated while addressing the UN body in Geneva that despite the results, the committee must continue to work with urgency and purpose as that is what the situation is demanding right now. “We need a common understanding on a working mechanism to help the Constitutional Committee discharge its drafting mandate,” he added.

He further added that he is convinced that if a proper procedure is followed and a right path is taken towards it then the progress made on the Constitutional committee will reflect positively on people and build more trust and confidence. He also said that the work requires a significant amount of determination and political will to be executed.

Women advisory was also convened by Pedersom following his address to the UN ambassadors. The Syrian Women’s Advisory Board was established five years ago by the United Nations to ensure that women, coming from diverse spectrums of life, are given equal chance and platform to prove themselves.

The diverse panel in this advisory brings a lot of different perspectives yet fighting for common interests such as gender equality and peace talks, suggested Pederson. According to the special envoy, the board has also stressed on the need to make effective institutional arrangements and guarantee women of protection and dignity in future

Agit Polat, a spokesman for the Kurdish centre, charged that French officials "yet again failed to safeguard us... This is a terrorist attack in our eyes, according to the AFP news agency. In the afternoon, a number of protestors, largely from the Kurdish diaspora, got into a fight with the police outside the centre and in the streets close by, throwing rocks and torching trash cans.
