Corona pandemic: the worst threat to
humanity in modern history has somehow spread-wide
across the world and been cutting down the economy, the health of
everyone. Even, developed nations are stumbling about defending
the corona pandemic and controlling the spread rate of the
virus. Nations have called on lockdown' to make people sit inside the home and stay away from getting infected. The Officials and The government of every nation are making efforts at the utmost level to protect
its citizens and as well as expats, migrants, and NRIs. Nations are making their best to give medical services and essential
needs to the people staying inside.
Countries in the middle east which
have most of the expats have made their statements to support the
migrants, expats in their nation during this corona pandemic
and Qatar also made such a statement. Qatar made a row of
announcements that they will support the expats & migrant
workers and will also raise funds to meet the needs of migrants,
daily-wage workers. But, it's devastating that no announcements
made by Qatar doesn't
came into existence so far to the ground
level.
Based on the latest reports from
Communicable Disease Center (CDC), there is a total of 11,464
COVID-19 positive cases in Qatar. About 94% of the positive
cases are non-Qatari, while only 6% of the positive cases are locals.
The daily COVID-19 stats of the CDC Epidemiology show that of
the 12156 total cases recorded by Qatari authorities, 32%
are Pakistani, 20% Nepalese, and 18% are Bangladeshi migrant
workers.
Communicable Disease Center (CDC)
indicates that 91% of COVID-19 total cases in Qatar are
male and only 9% are women;10,654 cases are non-Qatari men,
while 850 are foreign women. Differentiating the cases based on
people's age shows that 36,79% of COVID-19 cases in Qatar
are 25-34 years; 29,61% are 45-54 years; and 11,42% are between
15-24 years. COVID-19 positive cases are
self-isolated at their home mostly.
Currently, 6750 number of non-Qatari
are in COVID-19 quarantine isolation; about 3,750 are in
community vs 311 locals, while only 494 foreigners are hospitalized in
HMC facility on a total of 1,019.
The report revealed clearly that the
COVID-19 treatment reserved for foreign
patients compared to locals in the Gulf State is different. There is no
considerations about the poverty level, the economic situation of many underpaid
migrant workers. The Migrant workers are unable to get
treatments in Qatari clinics as they
couldn't make their fee paid at hospitals. Migrant workers were worried a lot about this kind
of support they received from Qatar.
Based on the daily statistics
publicized by International Human Rights Organizations, including Human Rights
Watch about the COVID-19 cases revealed that most of the cases arise from Industrial Area, Barwa City, and Labour
City, all parts of Doha. Doha is already infamous for the slum conditions and overcrowded
camps where the migrant workers are staying.
Migrants were made to stay here for
the works involved in building infrastructure for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Human Rights activists' questions, "Does Qatar really see FIFA World Cup even before the pandemic faced
poor conditions and unsafe workspaces?". Activists also ask, "Why
can't Qatari authorities shall ensure all migrant workers’ right to health is
fully protected during corona pandemic than arresting or expelling migrant workers
to stem the spread of the virus as happened recently?".
