Israeli army arrests over 20 Palestinians in occupied West Bank

The Israeli army arrested more than 20 Palestinians during a raid in the occupied West Bank, said the Palestinian Prisoners Club (PPC) in a statement on Thursday.

According to the statement by PPC, the detainees were from the governorates of Hebron, Bethlehem (south), Tulkarm, and Jenin (north). Eight detainees were from the Al-Ajouli family from Hebron, a Palestinian city in the southern West Bank.

There are currently 4,650 Palestinians held in jails in Israel. There are nearly 200 Palestinian children held by Israeli authorities in detention centres. Since the beginning of January 2022, a large number of deaths, injuries, and arrests of over 1,100 Palestinians by Israeli authorities have taken place. In March, 194 Palestinian children were detained by the Israeli authorities in detention centres. Israel also carried out air raids in the central Gaza Strip this year.

Earlier, many international organisations condemned Israel’s ongoing systematic aggression against Palestinians in the occupied territories.

In 2021, repetitive violence against Palestinian worshipers at the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem led to an 11-day war between Palestine and the Israeli authorities. At least 260 Palestinians, including 66 children, were killed in the war. Palestinians in Gaza, East Jerusalem, and the West Bank said that they suffered a lot because of the Israeli regime. In 2021, Israel’s offensive on Palestine claimed the lives of around 248 Palestinians in Gaza.

The conflict between the Israeli regime and Palestinians started in 1948 after the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories. Israel still occupies the West Bank. However, Palestinians want the occupied West Bank as part of their future independent state.

Direct peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians were sponsored by the United States (US) for nine months. However, it stopped in 2014 because of the issues related to Jewish settlements in the West Bank. Palestine also held the Israeli government directly responsible for the Jewish settlers’ practices in the West Bank.

Israeli settlers have once again attacked religious minorities in the region, this time targeting a church in East Jerusalem.

According to reports, the settlers assaulted clerics and worshippers at the Church of the Sepulchre of Saint Charbel, causing damage to the property and injuring several people. This kind of behavior is not only unacceptable but also undermines efforts to promote peace and stability in the region. Attacks on religious minorities are a direct attack on religious freedom and must be condemned by all. The Israeli authorities must take swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice and hold them accountable for their actions. It is also important to ensure the safety and protection of religious minorities and their places of worship, as guaranteed by international law. this incident is a sad reminder of the ongoing conflict in the region and the need for a comprehensive and just solution. It is up to all of us to work together to promote understanding, tolerance, and respect for different beliefs and cultures, and to build a brighter and more peaceful future for all.
