Turkey is once again in the news for disrupting balance in NATO and despite the warning that the country and its government is facing, it continues to poke the western alliances. Recent reports suggest that Ankra might exit from NATO.
Earlier, the Vice
President of United States Mike Pence also warned Turkey in April 2020
regarding the purchase of the Russian S-400 missile system. He had said that if
it goes ahead with the deal, it might end up losing NATO membership.
"Turkey must choose: does it want to remain a partner of the most
successful military alliance in the history of the world? Or do they want to
risk the safety of this partnership by making reckless decisions that threaten
our alliance?" We have made it clear that we will not stand by while NATO
allies buy weapons from our adversaries, weapons that threaten the very
cohesion of this alliance," Pence said.
Turkey was seen
getting more and more involved in Russia. It had sent one of its military
personnel to Moscow to learn how to operate the new surface-to-air missile
system. This operation started in 2019 and during the coming year, it further
finalised deals that led to Turkey occupying Russian military equipment.
Even last year
NATO faced a challenge from Ankara when it stood against several of the other
NATO allies when the third party was trying to diffuse the matter. This
severely impacted the image of NATO and undermined the organisation's cohesion
and ability to make a solid, collective decision.
Ankara’s outlook
of the Nagorno-Karabakh issue also created a lot of disturbance in the West
especially given the fact that it blatantly supported one of the countries
involved against the other, further igniting the point of concern. But the
support was not restricted on the political level but was extended to equipment
and human assistance.
During the France
killing and attacks, Turkey continually contradicted the stand of French
President Emmanuel Macron and supported the extremism practiced in the name of
religion. All of these incidents led to souring of its relationship with other
NATO members.
Another point of
difference between Turkey and other NATO members is its excessive interest in
Mideitarranean. European side has time and again warned Turkey of carrying out
its search practices in the controversial region but that has not stopped the
Erdogan government from serving its interests.
